Hi,

Welcome to the Pyramid Labs blog site. My name is Brian and I’ll be contributing to the English articles on this site.

Pyramid Labs is a gateway for information on MMO game research and development provided by Pyramid Inc. Through this site we will provide our research information to help online game developers and also provide a means of collaborating information about MMO development. Currently there are two of us, Mr. Takushima who will be writing the Japanese articles and I, who will be posting articles to Pyramid Labs. From time to time I will translate some of the Japanese articles for our English readers.

Before ending this post I’d like to give you a quick idea of some of the things we are researching by giving a brief overview of the Three Rings libraries.

The Three Rings or OOO libraries are the libraries that currently power the Puzzle Pirates and Bang Howdy games. With a user base of over a million, these are tried and tested libraries. They provide a flexible framework for producing Java based game servers/clients and also Flash 9 web clients.

The libraries are separated into three projects named after certain famous rings, Narya, Nenya and Vilya. Narya provides the tools for creating a game server and provides data management features between the server and clients. Nenya provides tools to help integrate 2d and 3d graphics into your game. Finally, Vilya extends those libraries by providing more specific game related notions like online game rooms, zones and scenes. All of these libraries placed together provide a very useful framework for creating networked games.

In the future I will introduce many other useful libraries, techniques and ideas. I’d also like to say that our research is a never ending learning process so we welcome your comments and suggestions. English and Japanese comments are both welcome.
